Feel What I feel, When I Feel, What I Feel, When I’m Feeling
Roy Ayers Ubiquity originally released Everybody Loves The Sunshine in 1976. Since the release of their LP, the tittle track has been sampled by many artists in hip-hop and R&B. If you haven’t listened to the whole album, I would definitely recommend it. AllMusic explained that the Ubiquity started to move into R&B and out of Jazz-Funk with their album Mystic Voyage in 1975, right before Everybody Loves The Sunshine. In an interview from The Guardian in 2017, Ayers explains that he was in Jimmy Hendrix’s studio when he came up with the lyrics, “Everybody loves the sunshine”.
It was a beautiful, hot, sunny day and I just got this phrase in my head: “Everybody loves the sunshine.” I started singing: “Feel what I feel, when I feel what I feel, what I’m feeling.” Then I started thinking about summer imagery: “Folks get down in the sunshine, folks get brown in the sunshine, just bees and things and flowers.”

When I put on Roy Ayers, I just feel cool. The psych/funk vibe in his music sends me in a whirl of synths, piano, and vocals. So when I heard Takuya Kuroda’s rendition, I was blown away. I have always loved the trumpet. I’m enamored by it’s timbre, it’s acrobatic capabilities and look. Kuroda stays true to the tune by flowing in and out of the original composition and flares his trumpet skills to add his own flavor. Super cool.
This image was taken at the Grand Canyon National Park on Halloween. Although it was October, the day was still hot and I was sweaatin. In the frame you can see a group of NPS members riding mules up a switch-back. Before this photograph was taken, NPS was feeding and preparing the mules to continue going up. They were friendly and waved hi to all the hikers going down and up the canyon. I love this shot because of the lines the switch-back and the mules make going from the bottom right to the middle left. The colors are also paired well. The light brown from the mules and the NPS’s chaps. The forest green that is on their uniform and the tree’s leaves. I also really enjoyed that the NPS member at the forefront is looking forward while his patch is facing me. I think I captured the frame at the right time.
I used my 50mm lens on this shot. I adjusted white balance so I could get a sense of heat in the shot.
Looks like I will be leaving Flagstaff for a while and will head to southern Arizona. I’ll be working in Patagonia, AZ and on my off days I’ll be in Tucson, AZ. So long pines and volcanoes/mountains. Hello desert and more mountains haha
